Sutherland’s Surgery, Walters Oscar Special, Ford Flies To Haiti, & More…

February 15th, 2010

Here’s the Scoop….

A special-effects laden opening ceremony welcomed the world
to the 2010 Winter Olympics. But amid the spectacle, a
fallen athlete was never far from everyone’s minds.

Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili died early Friday during
a practice run when he lost control of his sled and crashed
over a safety railing into a steel beam. The remaining seven
members of his team decided to carry on with the competition
and were greeted with a standing ovation when they entered
BC Place Stadium.

The audience of 50,000 held a moment of silence just before
the Olympic flag was raised, and many of the nearly 2,600
competitors from 82 nations wore black arm bands in
Kumaritashvili’s memory.

“When these bad accidents do happen they catch you so off
guard; never in a million years do you fathom something
like that could happen,” said U.S. ice dancer Tanith Belbin.
“Hopefully we can come together and offer condolences and
support to his team and family.”

24 Shooting Halts for Kiefer Sutherland’s Surgery…

Kiefer Sutherland is having elective surgery to deal with a
ruptured cyst near one of his kidneys, temporarily stopping
production on his hit Fox show 24.

The medical problem is not considered serious, and the
disruption to 24 is expected to be brief.

“We are temporarily suspending production of 24 while our
friend and colleague Kiefer Sutherland undergoes a medical
procedure,” the network says in a statement. “We hope to
resume production shortly and do not anticipate any
disruption in the broadcast of this season’s episodes.”

A rep for Kiefer says: “While Kiefer is frustrated to miss
even one day of work, he and FOX decided together that it
would be best to complete this minor elective procedure now
as a precaution as opposed to six weeks from now when
production wraps. He looks forward to returning to work
(this) week.”

Barbara Walters Ending Oscar Special After 30 Years…

After this year, Barbara Walters will no longer host her annual
Oscar special.

“ABC has asked me to keep doing these specials as they have
been so successful, and I’m thrilled we have such great stars
and have such a wonderful show, but to be honest, I feel like
I’ve ‘been there, done that,’” Barbara said on The View Monday.

Over the years hosting the ABC special, Barbara has
interviewed everyone from Elizabeth Taylor to Miley Cyrus.

“This special has been a labor of love for 29 years. I will
always remember when Hugh Jackman  gave me a private lap dance
or sitting down with the legendary Bette Davis or being taught
to tango by Al Pacino,” Walters reminisced. “It’s those
priceless moments that have made this special the Oscar
tradition that it has become, but I truly feel enough is enough.”

Her last installment, to air the same night of the Oscars,
March 7, will include interviews with best actress nominee
Sandra Bullock and best supporting actress nominee Mo’Nique,
plus clips from her most memorable moments.

Barbara will continue taping her annual “10 Most Fascinating
People” special.

He transported 20 volunteers, including surgeons, an anesthetist

Harrison says, “This is not about me, it is just about doing what

Hugh Jackman is giving an aspiring actor the chance of a
lifetime by holding open auditions to star alongside him in
Steven Spielberg’s upcoming movie “Real Steel.”

is the first project for Spielberg’s DreamWorks studio since

Hugh wants an unknown boy to star in the movie as his 11-
year-old son and has set up open calls to cast the coveted part.

Hugh comments, “I’m starting work on my new film Real Steel
with my friend and the film’s director Shawn Levy.”

Levy adds, “We’re actually looking for a young actor to play
Hugh’s son in the movie from DreamWorks, so if you think
you’re maybe our guy, go to realsteelcasting.com for more

It’s Emily Blunt…

Emily became pals with the legendary Oscar-winner after he
invited her over to his trailer at the beginning of filming
for a dinner of baked potatoes.

But despite their friendly ways, Emily admits she couldn’t
help but look on in wonder as he acted, much to the
detriment of her own performance.

She says, “He invited me over for baked potatoes topped with
baked beans and cheese to talk about our characters. So we
were pals.

“He’s very cool. He’s the best. I was riveted by him. I just
followed him around like a lovestruck teenager. I would sit
around and talk to him between takes and he’d tell us
wonderful stories. He is very wise, very open and incredibly
kind. He hasn’t lost that childlike enthusiasm for creating
a part. He’s quite an economical actor. It’s masterful to
watch, and it’s distracting. I’d watch him in the scene and
then think, ‘Oh, [bleep]! I forgot my line.’”

Here’s the Scoop….

24 is making it’s way to the movies!

With Kiefer Sutherland completely on-board as star, exec producer,
and contributor to the script, the flick is ready to head into
some key preliminary stages. The movie will find the nation’s
favorite counter terrorist unit officer heading to Europe to deal
with the bad guys.

The only thing that could be standing in the way of the show making
the move to a feature franchise is the TV show itself. If a ninth
season of the show comes through, than the movie will have to take
a back seat.

The buzz around the movie has begun. Start your clocks, 24 fans!

Are U excited for the show to become a movie?

Howard Stern Confirms He’s in Talks to Judge Idol…

Howard Stern admitted Monday that he’s in talks to replace Simon
Cowell as a judge on American Idol.

“There’s not a better job on the planet than judging that f—ing
karaoke contest,” Howard, announced on his Sirius radio show.

“It would be the best thing that happened to me,” he continued.
“What a cush job… $100 million for four months. Who wouldn’t
take that?”

The catch?

“They’d have to pay me a ton of dough because I already make a ton
of dough,” says Howard. “$100 million to judge a karaoke contest?
Yeah, I would do that show for $100 million.”

Howard says he’d quit his radio show if he ended up on the Fox
reality show. His $500 million, five-year contract expires at the
end of 2010.

Naturally, he thinks he’d be perfect at the gig.

“If I do say so myself, I can’t imagine anyone else but me
replacing [Simon],” Howard said. “I mean, I don’t know. How else
are they going to make that show work? Who knows how to broadcast
and who knows how to be interesting? And who’s not afraid to speak
their mind?”

Marc Berman, the senior TV editor at Mediaweek, agrees.

“I probably can’t think of anybody better than him,” he tells says.
“He would create a lot of controversy. If they’re looking to keep
the show on the map, it’s not a bad idea.”

suffering from extreme poverty, violence and unrest for so
many decades.”

David Arquette, Courteney Cox Considering Adoption…

David Arquette says he and wife Courteney Cox are considering
expanding their family.

“I don’t know. I mean, it takes a lot for us to do it, so
maybe adoption,” David said on The Bonnie Hunt Show. Courteney,
underwent in-vitro fertilization to have Coco at age 39.

David added, “Listen, I like practicing as much as possible!
But it’s hard… I’m exhausted!”

Late last year, the National Enquirer reported the couple were
in the process of adopting, which her rep called “a complete
fabrication” at the time.

Meanwhile, daughter Coco is growing up to be just like her mom!

“She’s a little messy so that’s sort of on my side, but she’s
very strong-willed which is very Courteney-like,” he says.

“We got her a flute recently and she is just walking around
[pretending to play],” David adds. “We’re jammin’ a lot, a
little Jethro Tull.”

Charlie Sheen Charged With Assault, Hugs Wife in Court…

Actor Charlie Sheen was formally charged in an Aspen court Monday
for the Dec. 25 incident in which he allegedly attacked his wife
Brooke Mueller.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Arnold Mordkin filed three counts
against the actor: felony menacing, third-degree assault and
criminal mischief. Charlie could face one to three years in
prison if convicted for the menacing charge. (Third-degree assault
and criminal mischief are both misdemeanors.) Charlie has not
entered a plea for the charges.

In the same hearing, Judge James Boyd lifted a protective order
preventing Charlie and Brooke from communicating. The modification
comes after the couple had mutually requested they be allowed
contact in order to mend their marriage.

“They’re very much in love, and they want to try to work it out,”
Brooke’s attorney Yale Galenter explained.

Charlie’s attorney Richie Cummins assured Judge Boyd that his
client “has taken a number of steps” to work on his problems
with anger management and alcohol.

At the end of the hearing, Charlie and Brooke got up and hugged
each other warmly but left the courthouse separately.

documentaries…

It’s Leonardo DiCaprio…

Leo plays a detective trying to solve a missing persons mystery
in an asylum in the new Martin Scorsese movie, and decided to
study the mentally ill to perfect his role.

But admits he maybe took his homework a little too far: “There
was a tremendous amount of research done involving the
entrapments of mental illness and the suffering that people go
through, so it led me to watch a lot of different documentaries
on mental illness.

“For a few weeks there, it was some of the most hardcore film
experiences I’ve ever had. It was like reliving trauma in a
way. It was pretty intense.”

And the intensity didn’t stop when filming began.

Leo says, “We were surrounded by it (mental illness) every day.
We were surrounded by dilapidated walls of an old mental
institution. We had somebody there who was guiding us through
the history of mental illness, the pathways of treating it and
the different forms of treatment.”
